Micro-credential submissions

Apply for a letter of support to list a micro-credential on the NZQCF

Micro-credentials

Micro-credentials are units of learning designed to allow recognition of a discrete set of skills that meet specific learner, employer, industry, community, and iwi needs.

NZQA-approved micro-credentials:

  • certify the achievement of a coherent set of skills and knowledge
  • meet a specified need
  • include an assessment
  • are no more than 40 credits
  • can be at any level on the NZQCF
  • are quality assured by NZQA or Universities New Zealand
  • are delivered by NZQA-recognised education providers.

Like qualifications, micro-credentials are listed on the NZQCF. When a learner has achieved a micro-credential, education organisations report their achievement to NZQA, so it is displayed on the learner’s New Zealand Record of Achievement.

Listing a Micro-credential

To list a micro-credential on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF), you must apply to the relevant Industry Skills Board for a letter of support.

A micro-credential application is reviewed against the following criteria:

  1. Does it add value to industry, learners, and community?
  2. Does it meet an industry need?
  3. Does it have a coherent structure?
  4. Does it address a skills or pathway gap?

Our support does not guarantee that NZQA will list the micro-credential or that the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) will fund it.

Additionally, providers can submit applications to NZQA in situations where we has declined to support the proposed micro-credential.

Requesting micro-credential support

  1. Complete the NZQA application form
  2. Complete our application form
  3. Submit both application forms and supporting evidence via email to info@ehcisb.nz
Once we have accepted your application, your request will be processed within 20 working days. If successful, you will receive a letter of support from us.
  4. Send your letter of support, and NZQA application, to NZQA to be processed.
  5. NZQA will process your application.

Accreditation for a Micro-credential

NZQA recognised education providers can apply for accreditation to deliver an already listed micro-credential.

Support from us can be made by emailing info@ehcisb.nz with a brief outline of your accreditation application.  Your history of delivery in the subject area will be reviewed, and an email response will be provided.  This email response can be used as evidence of your consultation with us prior to submitting the application for accreditation to NZQA.
